Why and how to use a safety razor? - All our advice - Plisson 1808
Just like the straight razor, the safety razor is making a comeback. More effective than disposable or electric razors, but also more environmentally friendly, it puts traditional shaving back in the spotlight. Plisson 1808 tells you everything you need to know about this shaving accessory, highly appreciated by modern men.
What is a safety razor?
Also known as a safety razor, it features a single, interchangeable, double-edged blade. Its distinctive feature? Only one part of the blade is exposed. This reduces the area of skin that comes into contact with the blade’s edge, allowing for a comfortable shave while minimizing the risk of cuts.
Safety razors come in a variety of styles depending on the material used (wood, metal, etc.). The length, shape of the handle (straight or rounded), and its thickness can also vary depending on the model.

Which safety razor is best suited to which use?
There are two types of combs to distinguish:
- The closed comb (a solid bar positioned beneath the exposed edge of the blade);
- The open comb (instead, a rake-like bar is positioned beneath the blade edge, allowing the beard hairs to pass between the teeth).
There are also two ways to access the blade when it needs to be replaced:
- By unscrewing the head (standard opening);
- By simply twisting the handle (butterfly opening).
Closed-comb safety razors are ideal for beginners, daily use, and normal to coarse beards. They are therefore suitable for most users. Open combs, on the other hand, are better suited to experienced users.
